Rebecca Simpson
GEM's national and international networks inspired Rebecca to move from frontline neighbourhood work into policy — where senior colleagues now seek her advice on current issues and government housing legislation.
After graduating in Psychology from Leeds University, Rebecca joined Incommunities as a Neighbourhood Housing Officer, drawn to a role working directly with people and communities. Three years in, with a strong desire to keep developing, her neighbourhood director invited her to join the GEM Programme as a Talent in House participant. She knew immediately it was the right next step.
Working in a specific area made it easy to work in a bubble. Interacting and building networks with colleagues nationally — and internationally — really opened my eyes to the bigger picture and inspired me to apply for my current role as a Policy Officer. The GEM Programme goes the extra mile to push you to challenge yourself and become a leader for the future.
Rebecca keeps abreast of current issues on a national scale, exploring how government policy shapes the lives of customers both locally and across the country. She now advises senior colleagues on policy matters and views the organisation from a strategic level — a perspective she credits directly to her GEM experience.
Be prepared to put the work in to get the most out of it. There are some truly unique experiences to be had that will stay with you throughout your career — so give it everything you have. You won't regret it.
